Have you ever been in the formula room in your clinic?  Do you ever feel like it's a sea of names and, if you're being honest, you have no idea what you're looking at? I completely understand. When I first started in pediatrics, I felt the same way.

On today's episode, we are simplifying the world of infant formulas. You'll understand the science behind standard infant formula, why there are so many different types, and how to choose a formula that's best for your patient. We'll even give you a simple visual to help organize the different formula types and when to use them. Lastly, we review 3 of the most common infant concerns – constipation, spitting up, and cow's milk protein allergy – and which formula you can suggest to provide symptom relief.

Our guest, Alayne, a pediatric registered dietitian, tackles three common concerns: constipation, spitting up, and cow's milk protein allergy.

Topics covered:

  • How to know if a baby is constipated or not? (Hint: just because mom says she is constipated, doesn’t mean she actually is)
  • What's the difference between rice starch and rice cereal in formula?
  • How quickly should I see improvement with a hypoallergenic formula for cow's milk protein allergy?
  • What is the typical composition of a standard formula and how are other formulas different?
  • What about European Formulas?

By the end of this episode, you'll feel confident guiding parents through the wonderful, sometimes messy, world of infant formula!
